Interactive Brokers
Close Positions Redesign

Overview

Interactive Brokers is a global brokerage firm known for its low-cost trading, wide range of investment options, and advanced trading tools.

In this project, I redesigned the close positions function for mobile app to improve user experience on making bulk management on their securities. The new design enhanced the customization and freedom of their position selection to enhance trading flexibility.

The new function has gone through compliance review and under develop phase, and it will go online this fall.

Introduction

The goal of implementing bulk management of close positions is to allow users to rapidly exit individual positions. This will help traders who are looking to secure gains or mitigate losses from a portion of their portfolio do so faster and more flexibly.

At the same time, IBKR will benefit from additional commissions generated from additional close positions orders as users take advantage of this tool to manage their exits in a more granular way.

Goals to Achieve

Background Research

What does "Close Positions" mean?

Closing a position refers to executing a security transaction that is the exact opposite of an open position, thereby nullifying it and eliminating the initial exposure. Closing a long position in a security would entail selling it, while closing a short position in a security would involve buying it back.

Current User Flow Analysis

An analysis on the current close positions function was conducted to have a thorough understanding on the problems and opportunities to exploit for the following design.

Currently, Close Positions only allows the user to filter the impact of their 'Close Action' in three ways:

  • Asset class

  • Long / Short Position

  • % to close out

As part of implementing bulk management, in addition to our existing filters, we will allow users to select one or more positions to close out.

Design Insights

How Might We improve function?

How Might We improve the function?

Problems

Opportunities

Users lack control over their preference on security selection

Current filters are general and macro with insufficient flexibility

Allow users to customize security selection

Enhance control over their management of portfolio

Keep consistent visual identity with other interfaces in the app

A New Branch: Manage New Column

An adjustment is made towards original 'Manage Column' widget to allow conditional selection to ensure the lawful exposure of data from vendors.
